Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM), one of Colombia’s largest public utility companies, provides more than 2 million people with water, electricity, and gas services. It has 5,000 employees. About 3,500 of the company’s 5,000 employees work in the headquarters in Medellín, Colombia’s second-largest city; the remainder work in offices in the state of Antioquia and other cities throughout Colombia. With the company’s continual growth, it was becoming increasingly difficult for employees to communicate within and between offices. EPM had several technical challenges as well. Like many large corporations, it was saddled with a Private Branch Exchange (PBX) system that it had to continue to use for several years. Until EPM could retire the PBX, the company needed a way to integrate the PBX system into its messaging environment. In June 2008, EPM decided to implement a solution based on Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 and Microsoft Office Communicator 2007. To implement the new solution, EPM worked with InterGrupo, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner. In July 2008, InterGrupo consultants deployed an AudioCodes Mediant 2000 gateway to connect the server to the company’s PBX system. Using a phased approach, InterGrupo deployed the solution to about 100 employees at first and then to 150 more. The goal is for all employees to be using the solution when the PBX is retired.
