MediaPack Impact
Michael Grosman
Director, Product Marketing, Analog Media Gateways

2004 is the third year of consecutive growth in sales of the MediaPack series of analog gateways. The MediaPacks have come a long way since the first generation of MP-100s. The second generation of the MediaPack has been commercially used for nearly two years. It provides a mature, field-proven, complete offering of 2, 4, 8 and 24 ports with FXS and FXO interfaces.

New software versions are constantly released which add new capabilities to the MediaPacks. The new software release (4.4) dramatically improves the "out-of-the-box" experience of the MediaPacks with handy enhancements such as automatic PBX tone detection "wizard", In addition Release 4.4 adds advanced telephony services offerings, such as direct inward dialing. The MediaPacks are being used for both Enterprise and Service Provider applications. The number of MediaPacks being deployed in the networks of service is constantly growing.

The MediaPacks are massively deployed in Multi-Tenant Units and hosted services applications. Multi-Tenant Units architecture takes advantage of the concentration of a large number of apartments/offices within a single building. The MediaPack-124 gateway is centrally located in the building, serving the apartments. High density is achieved by stacking multiple MediaPack-124 units in a standard rack. For an entry level, the smaller MediaPacks (2, 4 or 8 ports) is used. The existing telephony wiring inside the building can be used to connect the MP-124 to the apartments/offices, saving the cost of rewiring. When serving residential subscribers, Ethernet wiring inside the building can be used to carry both data and voice. The Multi Tenant architecture provides a cost advantage over CPE architecture both in CAPEX and OPEX. This allows a fast return-on-investment period for the service provider. The Multi-Tenant architecture provides an additional advantage over the CPE architecture – the media gateway is in a segregated location out of the reach of unqualified personnel. The Multi-Tenant network is managed with AudioCodes Element Management System, assuring a high level of service to the end customer.

The contribution of the MediaPack to the success of the service providers is best described by Stefan Manza, IP Telephony Technical Manager of Astral in the joint Astral-AudioCodes press release of March 18 this year: "We have selected AudioCodes CPE devices after conducting field tests on products from multiple vendors and were impressed with the performance of AudioCodes' media gateways. AudioCodes' responsiveness and flexibility, both in terms of services and products was particularly prompt. Working with AudioCodes has strengthened our competitive position with the addition of quality voice services offered."
The MediaPacks, the Mediants and AudioCodes' Element Management System comprise a winning trio for service providers seeking a seamless setup of network and services.
