For years, enterprise IT has applied Zero Trust principles to laptops, smartphones and tablets. Before those devices gain access to corporate resources, they must prove who they are, demonstrate that they haven’t been tampered with and continuously report their security posture.
Meeting room devices, however, have largely operated under a different trust model.
While Android-based collaboration devices already use secure boot, signed firmware and hardware-backed security, each manufacturer establishes trust using its own certificates, update mechanisms and validation processes. The result is a fragmented approach that requires IT teams to manage security on a vendor-by-vendor basis rather than through a consistent enterprise framework.

What Is MDEP?
Built on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and managed by Microsoft, MDEP “enables device manufacturers and software developers to deliver innovative solutions, backed by Microsoft’s reputation for security, trust and management”.1
At the same time, it brings a standardized, Microsoft-verified trust model to Android enterprise devices, extending familiar Zero Trust principles from employee endpoints into the meeting room.
Why Meeting Rooms Have Become a Security Priority
Meeting rooms are no longer simple AV environments. They’re connected enterprise endpoints running collaboration software, accessing corporate identities and exchanging sensitive business information every day.
As organizations invest in Microsoft Teams Rooms and AI-powered collaboration, these devices are becoming increasingly important parts of the corporate infrastructure. That also makes them part of the organization’s security posture. IT teams now face questions that were once reserved for laptops:
- Can this device prove its identity?
- Has its operating system been modified?
- Is it running approved software?
- Can its security status be monitored continuously?
Without a standardized trust model, answering those questions consistently across different vendors becomes increasingly difficult.
What Makes an MDEP Device Trusted?
A trusted device isn’t simply one that has security features enabled. It continuously proves its identity and integrity using cryptographic evidence.
With MDEP, trust begins in hardware. Every device contains a hardware-rooted identity backed by Microsoft Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), making it extremely difficult to clone or spoof. Secure boot validates that only authorized software loads during startup, while hardware-backed attestation enables cloud services to verify the device’s integrity before granting access.
And trust doesn’t stop after deployment. MDEP devices continuously report their security posture through Microsoft Intune, allowing administrators to apply Conditional Access policies similar to those already used for Windows endpoints. If a device falls out of compliance or is compromised, organizations can respond using the same management tools and security policies already deployed across their Microsoft environment.
The result is a consistent Zero Trust approach spanning laptops, mobile devices and meeting room technology.
